Daejeon's Bike Rental System

Daejeon has recently introduced a really great bike sharing system whereby anyone can rent a bike (the rental places are situated by most Subway Stations) for a very small charge, and explore the city. Cool hey :)

The bikes are bright green, and are hooked up to very cool 'techno looking' bicycle stands. Just follow the info below to figure out how to use them!

The following awesome information is from socius, a really useful Dajeon website :) so thanks to Socius for the useful info!

Price:

The bicycles are free for the first hour, 500 won for each 30-minute segment in the first 3 hours and then the price jumps to 2,000 won per hour for ever 30 minutes after 3 hours. The examples given on the Ta-shu website indicate that for a trip of 100 minutes the charge would be 1,000 won (100-60 free minutes= 40 minutes, which is two 30-minute segments). Likewise, a trip of 200 minutes would cost 4,000 won. This is 200-60 free minutes = 140 minutes. The next two hours are charged at 500 won per 30 minutes, so that’s 500 x 4 =2,000, plus 20 remaining minutes at 2,000 per 30 minutes. 2,000 + 2,000 gives us the 4,000 won total.

Renting:

You need a Hankkumi Transit card and must register it online with the City (*not entirely sure how to do this yet*) to start using the program. Only prepaid cards work at this time. You can also use your cell phone.

How to:

1. Find a Kiosk. You must have a registered Hankkumi Transit Card.

2. Press the "대여" (rent) button.

3. Bikes in green are available for rent.

4. Choose your payment method. Your choices are Hankkumi Transit Card and Cell Phone.

5. If paying by Hankkumi transit card, touch your card to the sensor. Wait for the beep.

6. (con't...) If paying by phone, select "phone payment." First, choose your phone service provider (SK, KT or LG). Enter your phone number and then your Alien Registration Number. Press on the grey "Receive Registration Confirmation Code" (인증번호 받기) button. When the code arrives on your phone, enter it in the bottom box and press OK (확인).

7. Go to the bike you selected.

8. Press the "Rent" button on the bicycle panel (대여). It will make a ting sound.

9. To remove the bike from the stand, wait for the "드르릉" sound. You can then remove it. Push the bike forward to remove it form the stand.

10. Ride safely!

Returning your Bike:

you can return the bike to any renting station! So you don't have to return to the same place where you rented it from :)

1. Connect your bike the docking station. Back the bike into the station. When you hear the "ting" sound your bike is successfully connected.

2. Check the bike. Push on the handlebars to ensure the connection is not loose. If you cannot remove the bike, it is secure and you are finished.

Night time adventures

Cycling round Daejeon has been fun, hot..but fun.

But nothing compares to our cycle from FarmBoy's house all the way to Yuseoung (a 1 and a half hour trek) through fields, rough terrain, and of course blistering heat. The wonderful idea occured to Farmboy while sitting is his gloriously cool apartment, aircon on full blast and a cup of ice water to his lips...little thought did he give to the humidity and UV rays being pumped out by the sun that day. But the idea had taken seed, and soon he had his accomplice and tour guide and off we headed to Yuseoung.

The ride actually wasn't so bad, we arrived in Yuseoung, drenched but exilarated, and headed straight for the Jimjillbang (the public bath houses where one pays a very small fee of about R40 and then gets to shower/sauna/swim/relax/get a massage all in privacy of a segregated building). We left feeling refreshed and energised and ready to eat a small horse with our friends Claire and Jono at a fabulous Morrocan Restaurant we had heard so much about.

Half way through the meal, needless to say, it began to pour with rain. Now we had left our bikes (locked up after my last bike was stolen last week~ sniff sniff) at the Jimjilllbang and had planned to come back to Yuseoung the next day by bus and cycle back home, as Claire had brough a rather large parcel of bedding for my mom to use when she comes to stay next week...so a nice comfortable Taxi ride I was thinking it would be.

But no, Farmboy wanted to cycle in the rain, and of course, me not wanting to miss out on any slight chance of adventure, hopped aboard the looney train and back we cycled...at 11 o'clock at night, through the rain and the mud, Farmboy carrying the linnen sack on his back...and me carrying...well the little empty rucksack of course...to arrive home exhausted but happy :)

Heres to many more night time adventures in Daejeon!

Early morning bike rides...

05:30 came earlier than usual this morning, maybe that was because I was jolted out of bed by my very irritating ring tone..."Umm...hhgggeeelo?"..."Babe, Im on my way. Be there in 5."

Ah man! I had completely forgotten about FarmBoy and my plans to go for an early morning cycle around my neighbourhood. I stumbled out of bed, managed to grab the first piece of clothing in my cupboard, brush my teeth and shake the sleep out of my eyes, all in time to hear the beeping of my door as Farmboy entered in the pin. And off we went!

Today was the first morning that has been cool, the perfect temperature for a little exploration. After a minor disagreement as to where to cross the road, we were off and away...off the beaten track, dodging old men waving pesticide sprays, and agima's (the name given to 'older married women' or rather the name given to the little old ladies who push and shove you when you happen to be in their way) pushing their prams while collecting all sorts of hidden treasures along the roads.

It was so quiet and peacefull, we even managed to catch sight of a lesser spotted night butterfly :0 One of the very few signs of life we've seen so far in Korea.
All in all a great way to work up an appeptite for the yummy choco-crumpets FarmBoy has become so good at making...

I ordered both of our bikes off Gmarket for a very reasonable price (in fact incredibly cheap for South African standards), and we have gotten such great use out of them already...and we've only had them for a few weeks. Farmboy has already saved about W50 000  (about R350) on bus rides, plus we get to exercise, while seeing different parts of town. What more could you ask for.

If your interested in getting a bike here, you can easily pick them up second hand at the millions of bike shops around, but asking around it seems that its cheaper to buy a new one off Gmarket (click here for the link). Both bikes were delivered within 2 days to my school, easy peasy!

Now we just have to go on a cycling trip...Im thinking Jeju Island :)
